First and foremost, towing in this way can be expensive in the initial outlay of money. Here are the items you need to tow a vehicle behind your rig: Towbar Towbar brackets installed on the front of the towed car Wiring for the towed car or magnetic lights Hitch and wiring on tow vehicle or motorhome Braking System for towed car Optional: Steel and stainless steel at every critical point ensure superior strength and structural integrity. Disconnects and Lube Pumps All of this equipment assumes that your towed car is set up for towing. What do I mean by that?

Using Towbars For Towing A Vehicle

Read on if you want to learn how to use our electric hook-up facility safely and efficiently. There are two main ways you can power electrical devices on the campsite. The first is to use a leisure battery, which is like a car battery and provides a 12V supply, and the second is an electric hook-up. Most commercial campsites in the UK will offer electric hook-ups on some or all of their pitches, we have 46 here at the Red Shoot Camping Park.

The power on our site is designed on the basis of diversity so the main site power supply is geared up to an average electrical usage assuming not all hook-ups take 10A at any one time. Occasionally, if a cold spell occurs at times of high occupancy and all users switch on electrical heaters, kettles etc.

Supplementing the September issue of GMC Motorhome News, Sam Carson of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, has advised that new American Petroleum Institute (API) SM Service Category oils contain a significantly lower amount of zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate (ZDDP) than former API SL, SJ and earler API Service Category oils.

Farewell to Microsoft Autoroute – Discontinued in If you are familiar with our blog, you’ll know Microsoft Autoroute features heavily in our route planning and navigation. Last year I spent the best part of a day compiling and formatting a data set in Microsoft Excel for use with Autoroute. Over , lines of information were formatted as hyperlinks to take you direct to where the information was displayed online from several sources. It has been downloaded more than 10, times – so at least I know I’m not alone.

If you were one of them – please complete the poll at the bottom of this blog post and let me know if you’d download a version. However on the 31st December you will no longer be able to buy Microsoft Autoroute via the online Microsoft Store. It also seems that all of the CD copies have dried up too and so if you want it you need to act fast, buy online and once downloaded ensure you backup the installation files as I’m not sure you’ll be able to access them again.

The feedback and enthusiasm from our users have helped make Microsoft travel planning software a leading solution for nearly twenty years. The retirement of these products will not affect software already installed. If it was purely navigation you are after then I concede that there are better devices or software available to perform that task. However if you want to handle a lot of POI Point of Interest data from several sources in a single screen and have full control over those data sets there isn’t really a piece of software which can deliver this in the same way.

I’ve always said that a ‘Sat Nav’ is great at telling you where you are going – but not so great at telling you where you are in relation to points of interest and I don’t like the way in which high volume data is formatted and displayed on these devices.

How to connect and set up your new HDTV: all the cables, content, and calibration you need

For a start let me tell you all that I nearly strangled the “busybody” that decided to sling my cable all over the campsite I was on back in August on the basis that “it is coiled and could overheat! The diameter and purity of the copper wire itself. I have seen brand-new cables that are so flimsy in design that they would be barely capable of carrying a 13 amp load.

In my case the cable is top quality, weighs a ton and has been tested to ensure that there is no damage. However, modern cables are getting thinner and lighter as raw material prices soar and manufacturers try to maximise profits.

Surviving off hook-up 11b9fe c f c7f-c3d14f d5 One of the great advantages of owning a motorhome is the ability to roam and not be tied down to a campsite every night. It becomes a number-juggling process as you balance the available electric and gas capacity against the need to cook, heat, light, refrigerate your food and power the water pump.

There are certain preparations that can be taken before setting out, that will maximise the amount of time you can spend away from the electric nectar of the mains supply. The first consideration is understanding how your leisure battery works — which provides the power when the engine is off. A typical leisure battery is rated at Ah, which means that if you draw 5A every hour from it thanks to your various electrical devices, it will last 20 hours before going from fully charged to flat.

One way to extend the amount of power you have available is to add a second leisure battery but there are ways of doing that are efficient than others. The first is to wire them to work in parallel so that they share the workload, rather than serially, where the supplied current would be double what your devices are expecting.

It will help if both batteries are the same power rating and, if possible, they are both the same age. This fits into the space usually occupied by the leisure battery and connects with the same wires. In fact you can recharge A just by running the engine for 20 minutes.

The photo of the motorhome on our main page is not our motorhome but one that resemble it, I will eventually post one of ours. Monday, August 9, Installation a battery disconnect switch and rewiring the batteries banks The PO, did little to make things easy, and the batteries were no exception, everything seemed to be jerry-rigged, and also there were far too many wires going to each post, so first I decided to install a battery disconnect switch to disconnect the battery from the house and engine to help prevent parasitic drain, it seems as if no matter what I did the batteries went dead.

I also lightly coated the connections with dielectric grease and reconnect the wire connectors. Today Saturday Jan 1st I completed the wiring of the fuse battery disconnect panel, tomorrow I hope to be able to install the two new Optima blue-top house batteries and the starter battery, surprised again of the very limited space, I wanted to upgrade the battery tray but due to limited space I only had 1″ of free room on the tray, I was very limted on what I was able to do.

12 volt Solar Power Choosing Panels and Regulator. When we began looking at 12volt solar power we found it something of a minefield. It is a complex subject, there was the usual jargon to overcome, and prices of solar panels varied enormously; typically from £ to less than £, depending on the source, for what appeared to be essentially the same 80watt panel.

Back in I went to work at the start-up of the Humber Oil Refinery. The Blender Control Room had a huge long panel with maybe a thousand or more switches, lights, recorders, indicators etc etc and I knew every one – except for one small push-button on the bottom right hand corner that was unmarked! I enquired what it was for and was told “Read the Manual.

It just didn’t seem right and over the next six months or so I would press the button every so often to see what would happen; and nothing did! Sometime in the middle of an electrician called Harry had finished a job early and was sat having a smoke in the Mess Room next to the Blender Control Room. I said to Harry “If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, could you please check out what the hell this unmarked button does?

The push-button was a “Remote Start” for the Emergency Generator located nearly half a mile away; and Conoco had been refusing to pay for it on the basis that it kept starting “at random intervals and for no apparent reason”! No-one knew who had authorised or installed the push-button; and I have never trusted things electrical ever since!

Mains Hook-up Cable Considerations. The quality and condition of the mains EHU affects how things work in the vehicle. This EHU lead was from my own van, everything worked fine except the Water never got Hot on v, it got warm, so the element was clearly working, just never got above tepid. On Gas the water heated up to full temperature. The charger ran the lights and charged the battery, the Television worked perfectly on v and our Volt Meter inside the van showed v at the 13amp sockets.

I cut the cable back to sound Copper and fitted a new Blue Socket and the Water Heater worked perfectly. I can only guess that the contact inside the connector was just good enough to supply everything, except the high current of the Water Heater? That shows the type of impact the EHU cable can have. When you need to be on EHU you want to maximise every amp at the Bollard especially if it is s 3amp Site, you might be surprised what part the Hook-up cable plays.

The reason the British Standard for an EHU cable, BS , specifies a 25amp cable is for extra safety capacity as well as being physically stronger..

Please be guided accordingly. This article was first drafted in , but after review is absolutely as “current” today as it was when first written. It is likely the most comprehensive review of pre-delivery inspections for taking delivery of any RV, whether new or used, and whether from the factory, a dealer, or through private sale.

There is no better feeling then hitting the open road and finding somewhere to pitch up in the motorhome. Hook Farm is very accommodating to the diverse range of touring vehicles, from 7m RV’s to bikers with saddle bags.

Watching television in a traditional stick and-brick residence is pretty straightforward. Over-the-air broadcast television can be viewed on either a digital TV or an analog TV equipped with a converter box. If you aren’t satisfied with over-the-air content, you can call your local cable company or a satellite provider and have them come to your home and set up a system of your choosing. Unfortunately, it isn’t quite that simple for motorhome owners because of the very nature of their travel lifestyle.

Some RVers choose to rely on over-the-air broadcasts when on the road, but reception can be nonexistent outside of metro areas. Many campgrounds offer cable TV service at the utility post, and most motorhomes are outfitted to hook up to this service. But if cable service isn’t offered at the campground you choose to stay at, you’re out of luck.

Connect two batteries in parallel — Part 2 answers the questions asked the most. Most people who want to connect two batteries together are trying to expand the battery capacity of their existing setup. One thing to remember, if you are going to install a second battery, you are going to have to start with two new, identical batteries. Same make, Amp hour Ah rating and if you can the same manufacture date.

In this video from Caravan Guard, Leisure Vehicles Officer Tim Booth goes through everything you need to know about caravan breakaway cables.

How to: Connect two batteries in parallel

The rebuild never seems to last and some of the areas like leaking around linkage and dry gaskets are often not fixable. They are too complicated, too hard to adjust, and in a difficult place to work on. I have a new engine, is the old carb still correct for the heavy breather? With a closed loop control, this should be adjusted automatically. I think basically, I hate carburetors. These are the parts to be added.

My personal preference is to connect it to the cab battery rather then the habitation battery, the reason being is that it draws a great deal of power when in use and the leisure battery has now way of compensating for that.

Print Email We’re now nearly three months into our third trip and one of the recurring problems from the previous tours is the matter of drying hair. Sophie, who has lovely long blonde hair, hates not being able to blow dry it properly. We tried all manor of 12v hair dryers which varied from pathetic to down right dangerous with melting wires and popping fuses.

In the end she settled to dry it using the hot air vents in the cab, which in Summer was a bit overpowering! There are two types of inverter, pure sine and modified sine wave. Pure sine wave is the better type which is exactly the same as the electricity you have at home. We purchased a Ring w Inverter – this particular model suited us for a number of reasons: Built in low battery voltage alarm and shutdown, over voltage, overload and temerature protection.

LED Display – showing both battery voltage and watts consumed. Remote Control to turn off although we isolate is separately as it will still use a minute amount.

What is a Switch Pitch Transmission? How does a Torque Converter work? Torque converters are a tricky thing to discuss because they are one of those concepts like a differential gearset- once understood its never forgotten, but until you have grasped the basic principles of it, its hard to imagine what makes it work. Theres been some excellent replies.

I have a 5th wheel. It has two batteries. My problem is they keep going dead. I can hook up to shore power for hours and once I disconnect, they will only hold charge for a short time they are practically brand new, I replaced the old ones because I thought they were bad, now not so sure. I run the generator and they die. I installed solar panels and they die. If you have any ideas, I would appreciate your help. I have two concerns about your problem with your RB batteries going dead.
